The key Sanskrit word for UFO enthusiasts in this text is “vimana.” The internet is full of references to vimanas because they are evidence of the long-term presence of extraterrestrial visitors in our skies. Translated variously as flying vehicle, aerial chariot, or airborne car, vimana is a better term than UFO or the very twentieth-century flying saucer. In the passage quoted above, for example, Chandra uses the word “car,” which is not surprising considering the period in which he translated it. These texts make it clear that vimanas are very much identified flying objects, and that they are superb aircraft of great beauty, speed, and versatility. There is even reference to vimanas having the capacity to become invisible, something that thousands of UFO spotters have witnessed when these objects disappear and reappear. Gods, such as Rama and other elevated beings, travel in these vimanas, sometimes meeting with other enlightened or more prominent intelligences than themselves. In this extract, for example, there is reference to Sri Krishna being in the celestial region. Taken literally, this could imply that Sri Krishna, who delivered one of the most profound of all ancient teachings, The Bhagavad Gita, was himself an extraterrestrial being. What better explanation could there be than this for his otherworldly wisdom and powers?

Just how old sacred Hindu works are is open to debate. Some scholars say that certain of them are at least five thousand years old, and others could be far more ancient even than this, because the texts, or Vedas, were said to have been handed down orally for many generations among those who had the ability to memorize long passages of scripture and had no need of the written word. In the light of this, some believe that the Vedas describe events that occurred tens or even hundreds of thousands of years ago.

Mention is made in this extract from The Mahabharata of King Yudhishthira having discourse with a deity—which occurs frequently in the Bible, for example in relation to Moses. This deity is referred to as “lord of all the celestials,” which suggests he is a prominent interplanetary being. The term could be equated to Cosmic Master, which can be used to describe an advanced spiritual being from another world. Reference to “brothers in the celestial region” also suggests that these beings are from other worlds. The text then becomes more mystical and seems to have an affinity with some of the teachings found in theosophy, Rosicrucianism, and elsewhere. The king’s brothers have renounced their physical bodies and traveled to the celestial region, indicating an out-of-body experience in which the psycho-spiritual aspect of our being travels independently of the human form. Gurus and mystics have claimed to be able to travel through space in their astral bodies and even to visit other worlds, as will be described more fully in later chapters. Nevertheless, the king is required to remain in his physical body to travel in the vimana and, with the help of the celestial deities, this is what he does.
